Tezos, a decentralized blockchain platform, was founded by the husband and wife duo, Arthur and Kathleen Breitman, almost a decade ago and since then the open-source blockchain network has come a long way.

Arthur Breitman spoke to CryptoNews in Brussels during EthCC 7 about scaling Tezos, the recent Mumbai Upgrade, artificial intelligence and on-chain roll-ups for customization, scalability, and cheaper transaction fees.

“Tezos started out as a monolithic blockchain in the same design as Bitcoin or Ethereum, with differences. We were first to be proof of stake,” said Breitman.

Mumbai Upgrade was a Major Milestone

Tezos has a built-in governance mechanism that allows stakeholders to vote on and implement protocol upgrades without the need for hard forks.

Over the years Tezos has seen several upgrades, and one of the big milestones was the recent Mumbai upgrade , which allows anyone to deploy Smart Rollups. Upgrades are usually named after major Cities around the world.

Breitman said Tezos is focusing on developer experience, “which is super important” he goes on to explain that a lot of the development is kind of a sub-language.

AI is Better at Coding

“What’s more, a lot of software development in the future is going to be done by AI,” explains Breitman, “AI is getting better and better at coding… a lot of future software development in the world in general, is going to be done by AI.”

Breitman believes AI is better at coding languages for which it has large corpus data. For example when asked to write JavaScript or Python, AI will do this very well. But in some cases such as when asked to write “COBOL” compiled in an English-like computer programming language, AI will do it, but it won’t work as well.

Breitman said AI can assist developers in writing smart contracts more efficiently. Mainstream programming languages are crucial for AI to work effectively in smart contract development.

In a blog post earlier this year, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin discussed the intersections between crypto and AI warning to “tread carefully.”

Buterin claims that “with the rise of much more powerful AI and the rise of much more powerful crypto in the form of ZKPs, FHE, (two-party and N-party) MPC,” adding that there are some promising applications of AI inside of blockchain ecosystems.

Jstz and Tezos: JavaScript is Coming to the Blockchain

Another update for Tezos X, a smart rollup powered by JavaScript, involves “Jstz” which is pronounced “justice.” According to Tezos, Jstz, is an upcoming layer 2 rollup being built on Tezos to allow developers to use JavaScript and its resources.

It is enabling the language itself, what sets Jstz apart is that it’s being designed to comply with standard JavaScript APIs.

Michelson Language

Smart contracts on Tezos are written in Michelson, a domain-specific language designed for security and formal verification. Tezos, for example, went down the path of security – and Michelson was created to enable formal verification from the start.

According to Tezos, Jstz is being built to offer the familiarity of a Web2-like experience – but supercharged with the best perks of Web3, like built-in identity, wallet, and payments.

Once it is fully operational, developers will not experience any significant differences between using Jstz and any other server-side JavaScript runtime, like Cloudflare Workers or Deno.
