Tinder has launched a new AI-powered feature, “Photo Selector,” designed to help users choose their best profile pictures. This tool is designed to improve the user’s dating profile by picking the best photos from the user’s photo album, which in turn increases the chances of getting a match.

Tinder AI photo selector feature applies facial recognition to make the process of selecting the best photos easier. The user uploads a selfie on the Tinder app that creates a facial geometry in the app. This technology enables AI to select the user’s face in many pictures stored in the camera roll, a technique Google and Apple have applied in their photo applications.

Survey reveals users’ struggles with selecting profile photos

The AI suggests a set of ten selfies that it believes will be most effective in the user’s profile based on the research that Tinder has done on the characteristics of effective profile pictures. Some of the factors that are considered include lighting and composition.

According to Tinder , Photo Selector was launched because users’ profile pictures play a crucial role in the success of dating applications. The survey of 7,000 respondents between 18 and 25 years of age stated that 85% of the candidates want their profiles to be real, and 52% of the respondents face a problem in choosing their profile picture. Also, 68% of the participants believe that having an AI assistant would be helpful in this process. On average, users take about 33 minutes to choose the perfect picture for their profiles.

According to Tinder data, the number of photos, especially the photos that truly represent the user’s interests, increases the chances of receiving matches. Heterosexual women using the app liked men’s profiles with at least four pictures, and men who uploaded more than one photo of their faces had a 71% higher chance of getting a match with a woman.

Tinder CEO highlights industry-leading AI integration

Tinder’s AI-powered feature is not the first of its kind in the dating app industry. Earlier this year, the dating app OKCupid partnered with the photo editing application Photoroom to help users blur out their former partners in the photos.

“We’re proud to be the first dating app to roll out an AI tool that can make the profile-building experience significantly easier — an area we know is one of the hardest parts of dating. As the category leader, we’re pushing ourselves to define the industry’s best use cases for meaningful consumer AI integrations.”

Faye Iosotaluno, CEO of Tinder.

In addition to the new feature, Tinder provides tips to improve the photos that users post on the app. According to Devyn Simone, the dating expert at Tinder, it is recommended that users take their pictures in daylight and use pictures that do not include other people.

Photo Selector will be introduced for iOS and Android users in the United States this month, with plans to expand to other markets in the summer. This feature shows that Tinder is constantly trying to enhance and develop the experience of using its application, thus making it easier for users to find a match.

Match Group, Tinder’s parent company, has also increased its investment in generative AI technology. Last year, Tinder’s Chief Product Officer, Mark Van Ryswyk, suggested that generative AI could be used to create user bios.
