Vitalik Buterin at Token 2049: Crypto Is No Longer in Its Early Days
Buterin challenges the belief that crypto is still early, comparing it to the internet's growth and saying it's now ready for impact.
The TOKEN2049 conference kicked off today, September 18, 2024, at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, one of the event’s key speakers, made waves with his keynote address on the current state of the crypto industry.
In his speech titled ‘What Excites Me About the Next Decade,’ Buterin argued that the crypto world has evolved significantly and is no longer in its infancy. He pointed out that Bitcoin has been around for 15 years, and Ethereum for over a decade. “We’ve seen innovations like ChatGPT transform how we view AI,” Buterin said. “So, are we really still early? No, we’re entering a phase where crypto is becoming usable.”
Buterin’s comments challenge the common belief that the crypto industry is still in its early stages of development. He compared the evolution of crypto to the growth of the internet, suggesting that the time for foundational infrastructure is behind us. Instead, he believes we are now in a unique phase where the technology is ready to make a significant impact.
Despite ongoing challenges such as price volatility and regulatory hurdles, Buterin remains hopeful about crypto’s potential. His speech encourages a fresh perspective on the industry, highlighting that while crypto may not be in its early days, it is in a pivotal stage poised for transformation.
