A recent data breach at SRP Federal Credit Union in South Carolina has put over 240,000 members at risk of identity theft and financial fraud. Hackers gained access to sensitive personal data, including social security numbers, driver's license information, dates of birth, and financial account details, between September and November 2024. The ransomware group Nitrogen has claimed responsibility for the breach, and experts are concerned about potential security monitoring and incident response protocol shortcomings. Members of the credit union are advised to monitor their financial accounts for unauthorized activity and report any suspicious transactions to their bank or credit card provider. The credit union is currently facing potential legal action and has enacted standard incident response protocols, launched a forensic investigation, and offered affected individuals a complimentary subscription to Experian's credit monitoring service.
